Merrimack (Ship) naval cruising journal, 1799.

The logbook of the ship Merrimack is actually a naval cruising journal of a ship in the United States Navy on a privateering cruise in the West Indies, Jan.-Dec. 1799. The shipmaster was Moses Brown; the logbook keeper was midshipman Joseph Brown. The logbook includes accounts of the capture at sea of vessels, and at least one death on board. During its voyage, the Merrimack spoke numerous vessels including the ships Alexander and Ariadne (both out of Boston), Lavina (out of Philadelphia), and Pomona (out of NY); the schooners Diligence, Lark George, Neutrality (out of New Haven), Polly (out of N.C.), Retaliation, and Tickler; the brigs Eagle, Harriot (out of Charleston), Nancy (out of Baltimore), and Pickering; the sloops Herald and Lois (both out of New London), and Rising Sun (out of Norwich); the vessels (of unknown rigging) Commodore Barry, Constitution, and Victory (out of Norfolk); and the U.S. ships Delaware, Ganges, Montezuma, the U.S. brig Norfolk, and the U.S. vessel (of unknown rigging) Washington.
